I’ve been rather over stuffing the blog with race reports recently so this one will just be a highlights and that’s because it was a race that deserves highlighting

  • 3.14 mile loop (1-10 loops)
  • Almost entirely trail
  • One bloody big sandy hill to climb
  • Beautifully set around the green spaces of a very foggy Guildford
  • Immaculately organised
  • Great volunteers
  • Quality festive aid station
  • Nice and low key
  • Cost effective (a mere £16, you could put the price up a few quid)
  • Trophies for various distance winners
  • Nice play on the term ‘Mince Pie for the race name ‘ I mean who doesn’t love Pi (3.14)
  • Friendly atmosphere
  • I managed to get round despite exhaustion and a difficult time in Liverpool the day before
  • I got to meet the awesome Roy – Susie and Shaun’s awesome bulldog
  • Lots of lovely chatter
  • Great free Wacky Races buff
  • Great medal

Conclusion: Wacky Races are putting on a really nice event here and it’s well worth considering for the next offering. It’s just festive enough, it’s such a cheap race that even one lap would feel like good value and importantly it makes a great year ending race. You really can’t go wrong with this one and if the other events offered by WR are even half as good (most notably The Omen 66.6 miles) then you’ll be in for a treat. Recommended.

I’m not doing as many races as I normally do in any given year but there was one that opened on April 13th that I couldn’t resist – The Saintelyon.

It was brought to my attention by Cat Simpson last year (but sadly too late for either of us to enter) however, after seeing it I decided that this was a must for 2015 and so I’ve entered. I am so looking forward to racing through the night, in France at the start of December, for 72km and the question for you should be (given that Eurostar will run direct from London to Lyon) why the hell aren’t you joining me?

It’s now December 2nd and yesterday was a rest day, my first rest day since I began Govember. I enjoyed the Sunday, I got up early, didn’t look at my bike, took only a cursory glance towards my bike, kicked off my running shoes, did a hint of housework, built some new furniture and even ascend the loft ladder to get down the Christmas decorations for my OH. The Good Samaritan in me helped an old lady to use her DVD player and I ordered more Christmas gifts because it is better to give than to receive. That was my Sunday, that was my rest day.

As I write this though I am covered in sweat and shivering on a late running train from Kent and it’s 6.30am, I’ve just run my fast morning session. Govember may well be over but the effect of sustained running means I’m now better equipped for December training where I can begin the preparation for my year of ultra running. Govember gave me the following results (roughly as I measures my routes and ran roughly the same distance every day) Running: 220miles Swimming: 6miles Cycling: 55miles. December will be very different, I won’t be running every day – although I will exercise most days and there will be more distance running (lsr and b2b). This is probably the most prepared I have ever felt for an ultra, which is a good start and it looks like my body is holding up to the demands I’m placing on it – or perhaps I’m getting better to grips with what it means to train more sensibly.

What I can conclude though is that December has hit the ground running – literally and as long as the festive break doesn’t provide too much of an interruption I should more than be fine when Country to Capital comes calling next month.
